’BECOME YOUR BROTHERS KEEPER’ Part 2
September 21, 2020Indeed it is a beautiful day, and it a beautiful day because of God. However, what makes our day a joyous one, it is not because of the good things we attained, but it is the beauty of God which impacts our day. If though circumstances were not favorable, we would still regard it as a beautiful day.
Let us continue fellowshipping and sharing as today we will be discussing a very profound topic which is “being your brother’s keeper”. This subject or statement does not apply to everyone, because not everyone is your brother. In this sense, you cannot keep everyone but only your brother and the father keeps the son.
The moment you say you are keeping your brother who is an unbeliever, you are deceiving yourself. There is an African proverb that says “you are my brother, from another mother” this does not apply to us because what makes us brothers is the Gospel we believe in. It goes further, we are brethren’s because we believe in the same doctrine.
Generally, we are all Christians, but if we do not believe in the same doctrine then we are cousins and not brothers. Because what we are taught is different, however, one thing that makes us common is that we believe that Jesus is Lord. The question is what is “being your brother’s keeper? Brotherhood and being your brother’s keeper it is a very sensitive topic in this sense because you have to discern everything you do in becoming your brother’s keeper. Among us in the house, there are certain individuals we refer to as brothers yet these individuals are not to be kept. Hence, we should be extra careful who keeps us and also who we keep.
As mentioned that brotherhood and being your brother’s keeper it is not for everyone, with that said; there are others in the house of God whom you should not keep. Even where the same doctrine is taught, there are certain individuals you should not keep. Look at the life of Judas, Mary anoints the feet of Jesus with expensive perfume, and Judas exclaimed that the perfume could have been sold, and the money given to the poor. Therefore, without discerning the heart of God; one would think Judas is his “brothers keep” and has the poor’s best interest at heart.
Jesus is able to discern beyond physical appearance. He is able to rebuke and correct, hence, He replied Judas and said, ‘the poor will always be with you’. Judas had motives and Jesus was able to discern and correct. Matthew 25, a story where the king separates the goat from the sheep. He referred to the sheep that he was fed by them(sheep) when he was hungry and they gave him water to drink when he was thirsty. They(sheep) asked how they could have done such and Jesus answered them, you did such for the least; it is as if you have done such for me. Previous scripture slightly explains what it means in being your brother’s keeper. Those that Jesus addressed above, it was only through discernment that they knew who Jesus was.
Being your brother’s keeper goes hand in hand with discernment, as it aids you on whom to keep and who is not to be kept. With discernment, you won’t be deceived. Many were used in the house of God result being, they lacked discernment. Hence, God teaches us through our Spiritual father that among brethren, before we assist one another we must consult him. Yet we can bypass this process if we are able to apply discernment. Otherwise, due to the lack of discernment, moreover, to protect ourselves and those we want to keep, we must always consult our father. Without discernment, you will reject even those God has sent.
Story of Abraham encountering angels, it took discernment for Abraham to see that before him it was actually God together with His angels. With discernment Abraham was able to say, “let me prepare you something to eat”. The emphasis on discernment is because we were warned by Paul, he said be careful as the devil masquerades himself as the angel of light. Some might portray an image that they are seeking help, and without discernment, you assist, later you are unable to assist others. With that said, becoming or being your brother’s keeper is beyond helping each other randomly as we live in perilous times, and we must be vigilant; and careful even in being a helping hand and even in not helping.
This does not only affect the one who offers help, but also the one who is being helped. Often times, some offenses we have harbored in our hearts are so unnecessary. If there was discernment before you helped someone who was not a brother. So now you became offended with the reply you received. If you had discernment from the onset, you would have not tried to help someone who was not to help. When people are offering assistance or a helping hand, they do that wholeheartedly, and when they fail to assist that individuals they are not discouraged to even keep, and help the one God has sent.
Due to offense, you are now unable to do the duties of the Father. So there is a high demand for one to discern as to whom is a brother to be kept. Let us speak about Jonathan and David, Jonathan loved David without even knowing him, this was spiritual. There is love that God deposits in you for your fellow brother, this love is unexplainable. Jonathan loved David as his own brother and this is beyond friendship. There is a huge difference between being a friend and being a brother, friendship goes with similarities, but with brotherhood, you cannot choose your brother. The Holy Spirit calls you and then also calls a brother for you.
Just as we did not choose our Spiritual father, we cannot choose sons for him. Thus, we cannot go to the father and state the next brother’s mistake and say he is not one of us. One thing we must understand as sons is that, we should not promote ourselves to the level of the father. There are brothers who see in the level of the father, so they can be helpful or dangerous. The manner in which they react shows forth their motives. If a brother who is graced with sight sees that one of his fellow brothers won’t be with them for long, he saw in the level of the father, but how he responds to the situation is very important.
Jesus knew from the beginning who Judas was, but he welcomed him. If it was Peter who knew who Judas was, would he had used the same sword he used on the soldier on his brother? It is very important to know your position as a son, indeed the father is loved by us wholeheartedly but Jesus had to say to Peter, behind me satan! Peter saw that where Jesus wanted to go is a very dangerous place, therefore Peter wanted to keep Jesus from the Will of God. It seemed right, Peter had the right to warn Jesus that where He wanted to go He was going to die, but the manner in which Peter acted, he saw in a level of a son and Jesus saw in the level of the Father.
Yes, you want to keep your brother, you are keeping your brother but the manner in which you do that is very important. The most dangerous thing God can entrust you with is an open sight. The moment their eyes were opened, Peter wanted to stop the Will of God. Therefore, you being able to see that your fellow brother is slacking, it is the moment a dangerous thing you can be entrusted with.
I am reminded of a common scripture, which outlines being your brother’s keeper. The story of Cain and Abel ( see Genesis 4:1-16). Cain was at the level of the Father because he was able to see beyond the heart of Abel and his weakness. Hence, Cain was not pleased with God accepting Abel’s gift. Cain was more spiritual compared to Abel, as he was forever in the presence. Henceforth, God was able to correct Cain and told him that sin is knocking at your door. The honors were with Cain to correct his ways, however, Cain bypassed Abel’s gift to only see his weaknesses.
Cain saw Abel’s weakness and deemed his gift unworthy to be received, and then he killed Abel. In the book of Hebrews, Paul addresses this to show that Abel had a weakness. He said, “the blood of Abel cries for vengeance but the blood of Jesus speaks a better Message” – meaning even if Abel was alive he would still avenge. Abel was not spiritual, but Cain was able to see in the level of the Father. He was able to judge and cast a stone. Similarly, with Peter, he would have used the sword to cut off Judas’ ear.
With regards to Cain being spiritual; being spiritual as a brother, can prevent your fellow brother from learning. The father is able to see when one is suffering from a certain challenge, however, he is able to see that particular challenge won’t lead to death. Whereas as a brother, you take your fellow brother out of a teaching. Get this, being a brother is not about fathering.
As a brother, you are not fathering, but your duty is to make the message of the father clear. You do not come with a new instruction as a brother, but your duty is to remind your fellow brother of the father’s teachings. Sight is what birthed our pride in fellow brothers. Story of Elijah and Elisha, they came to Elisha and said do you not know that your father will be taken away. The brothers of Elisha were more spiritual as they knew that Elijah will be taken away.
