‘IS IT RIGHT FOR A CHRISTIAN TO DATE OR MARRY AN UNBELIEVER?’ Part 1

Today we are going to talk about whether it is okay to date or marry an unbeliever. It doesn’t mean that it is okay to date, yet it is not the same as being with an unbeliever. The bible in 1 Corinthians 7 says if someone acts improper towards his brother they should get married.

Before we go to the dangers I want us to go to the biblical point of view. Today I want us to go to scriptures so that people may know that it is not my mind or what we teach in Yeshua Ministries. I always say there is no church without the Bible, so if the church doesn’t follow the Bible then what is its use? The same applies to the government, there is no government without the constitution. If the constitution is violated then there is no government, if the church doesn’t follow the bible then there is no church. There are churches that do not preach what I am about to tell you now. Some churches do not care whether you marry an unbeliever or not. Let’s start from Genesis where marriage began. If your child can come to you and say why should I not marry an unbeliever will you be able to answer them? [Genesis 1:26-28], God made man in His own image. So what is an image? The minute God says He has made man in His own image He is referring to the spirit.

He created animals but when it comes to human beings He made a spirit. Verse 27, adding to the topic of homosexuality, homosexuality doesn’t have an image. God blessed them and said be fruitful and multiply. When man fell he lost the image of God. You can’t go to an unbeliever and say we have the image of God. The image that you get from Adam tells you the image of Adam. The bible says Adam bore a child according to his image because at that time Adam had already lost the glory. He was no longer a spirit like before. When Jesus came He was coming to bring back the image. An unbeliever doesn’t have the image of God. When it says God created man in His own image – male and female- this means marriage. Eve was not the image of Adam. When Adam said the bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh, this can be viewed on two sides. If he was confessing this apart from God then he is wrong but if he was confessing it bearing God in mind then he was correct. Eve doesn’t get her image from Adam because already in chapter 1 God had already given her an image. So marriage should contain people with the same image.

In marriage, you need to be blessed. Verse 28, they needed to be His image both male and female. There is no dominion or authority in marriage if one lacks the image. [Genesis 1:3-4] there is no way God could say that light and darkness are good together, hence He had to separate them. He can’t separate what was not together – He realized that light and darkness are together but don’t look good together. Only one was approved which is the light. Before we were born again we were of darkness and now we are of the light which God approved. Why does God say do not divorce if you got married while you were unbelievers, this is because God honours the covenant of marriage more than anything. There was no marriage between light and darkness – so there was no covenant.

The minute you want to get married ask yourself if you and your partner bear the image of God. [Genesis 2:1] we understand that Eve already existed in Genesis 1. There was marriage already in Genesis 1 because God blessed them. Genesis 1:28 can never apply to you alone because it is of marriage. You can’t be fruitful alone. Even Jesus couldn’t be fruitful alone. Fruitful and multiplying is of married people and not for single people. The ministry of Adam was to take care of the Garden. There was no helper comparable to Adam. In chapter 1 there was marriage, hence he says He will make a helper except for the animals because they were not there in chapter 1. This is what God wants for your life and that can never happen unless you find a suitable person. Adam had a ministry that needed someone to assist him. Only the one who was in Genesis 1:28 can help him.

If you get married to a man who doesn’t bear the image then who are you helping? It’s either you help them in Christ or in the world – in the light or darkness. If you are a Christian man and you marry an unbelieving wife you are allowing darkness to help you. When Paul said there is a thorn in the flesh, people misinterpret it and say it was a sin. But there is no grace that helps you to live in sin – this is a contradiction because Grace helps you to say no to sin. When people who are not born again get married, the moment one gets born again – there is grace that is available which is to help the one who is a believer to win the one who is an unbeliever. So we should not create our own grace. There is no grace that accommodates sin. It is possible that you say you are homosexual but you do not allow grace to teach you how to say no to sin. There are times where Christians create their own grace. Don’t say God will grace you and you say yes to someone who doesn’t believe. Now that you know the truth you can’t go and marry an unbeliever, there will be no grace because you entered knowing.

As a believer the minute you want to experiment with homosexuality it is not a mistake and you didn’t fall but you voluntarily entered and one thing you must know is that there is no forgiveness. After hearing the message of truth you must know that the truth binds you. Yet it doesn’t mean we should keep quiet and not preach the truth because we don’t want to bind people. Ministers will be accountable for the truth they are not teaching. [Genesis 3:6], nothing happened when the woman ate. The apple had no power in the woman, she ate and nothing happened. Imagine you are a woman and you try marrying an unbelieving man and say you will win him yet the power to win is not given. Men are not practicing to save unbelieving women. Men are given authority to save women, but they don’t just go and marry unbelievers. Jesus washes the woman but the woman can never wash the husband. It is women in the churches who are marrying unbelieving men while they don’t have the authority to wash them. Women have the power to cover. You will cover the weakness of your husband while other women cover the glory and the beauty of their husbands.

Eve couldn’t affect Adam and her weakness was not affected as well because Adam was still in the right standing with God. Eve ate yet they were still clothed. When Adam ate immediately they got naked. Had Adam eaten without Eve eating they would have fallen still. She gave Adam the fruit while she was forgiven because she was still clothed. As a sister who marries an unbeliever know that whatever he does will affect you. There is no way he can save you. When you marry an unbeliever it means you are okay with your prayers not being heard and you are internationally separating yourself from God because you love this person. Are you ready to give up your soul for a man? Salvation needs to be genuine. Let’s not go and assume that the person is born again because they go to church. Do they believe in Jesus because they are with you? What will happen when you pass on will they still continue in salvation?

The woman was not able to affect Adam, so your holiness as a woman will not affect your husband because there is authority over you. [Genesis 3:16], your desire shall be for your husband – this is a curse. The husband it is talking about is a husband who has fallen – this is lust, it is not love. Ephesians talks about love but here it is desire because the husband has fallen. There is a mess in this curse, ‘and he shall rule over you’ the language of God changed because these people fell. When someone rules over you, you have to abide by their rules. Being married to an unbeliever there is no love and submission but it is lust and rulership. I am not addressing people who are already married but I am addressing single and engaged people. If you are single, dating, engaged and they have paid dowry for you, ask yourself why the devil capitalizes more on women? As a woman when you submit to the authority of an unbelieving man you are defeated but if it is the man there is a possibility that he might save the woman.
